Camping on the Georgia-Florida Line

St. Mary's, GA - Crooked River State Park - April 1, 2015

Bunch of catching up to do, but first gotta say that I'd never thought we'd be "retired on the beach in Florida"

Goes to show that you just never know.  That was yesterday.

Main Beach – Fernandina, Beach FL

Great community beach, accessible from South Georgia and North Florida

A barkeep from out of town, gave us a good heads up that the beach at Fernandina Beach would be a worthwhile excursion, and we definitely agree!  We had been staying at Crooked River State Park over the border in St. Mary’s, GA and made the 35 minute run down here on a sunny spring day.  Great, white sand Florida beach!  The water was cold, so not many swimmers, but plenty of people enjoying the beach, volleyball, lounging, shell collecting, fishing, or just walking.  Great spot, easy and abundant parking provided by the community, restroom/changing rooms, playground for kids, and rinse stations for cleaning up after an afternoon on the beach.

Skidaway Island State Park

Lovely, spacious, beautiful wooded sites, and spic-and-span clean to boot!

We have nothing but good things to say about the Georgia state parks.  From check-in, through departure we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.  This is a piece of quiet and beauty, but only 10 miles from the beautiful small-city of Savannah and all if it’s rich history.  The park itself has miles and miles of hiking/biking nature trails, with interpretations of both the natural and human history of the region.  See sites of the stills operated by moonshiners in the Prohibition era.  Enjoy the bird life including beautiful bluebirds, and egrets, spanning both inland forest and coastal marsh ecosystems.  Wonderful little interpretive center with a replica of the giant ground sloth, that once inhabited the area.  Very clean well run facilities!

Here's a still, found by the feds and destroyed with axes.

Tybee Island

Explore this great little beach community by bike!

Spend a day exploring this bicycle-friendly beach community.  Lovely town beach, civil war (and earlier) forts to explore, an historic lighthouse, fishing pier, shops and restaurants.  The beach was a great place to hang out, picnic, watch the ocean traffic steam by from the busy port of Savannah.  Tim’s bicycle rental was friendly and gave prompt service.  The well marked bicycle paths/roadways were well respected by residents (and visitors) alike.

Wormsloe Plantation – Savannah, GA

A plantation showing a mix of the past and the march of nature

This historic spot was once the property of the Noble Jones family, a founding family of Georgia.  You’re initially inspired by the Live Oak archway featuring 400 trees on the entrance to the plantation property.  There’s a good short film showing the history of the “Georgia Experiment” initially attempting an entrepreneurial society banning slavery.  Jones was part of that experiment and, apparently, the only success story.  Other features of the plantation include “tabby ruins” of the original Jones house.  Tabby is a slip-form building method incorporating an aggregate of oystershells, sand limestone and water.  Use your imagination here!
