Alligators and Snakes in South Alabama

April 11, 2015 - Meaher State Park, Spanish Fort, AL

Did you know that Alabama features 49 species of snakes? Papa Tom would have had a hard time here.

The American Alligator also calls Alabama home, so go ahead and sing-along!

But there are some other beautiful things in the Mobile Bay area, including Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, AL about 1/2 hour south of Mobile.

A delightful formal garden retreat created by the local Coca Cola bottling pioneer.  Loved our 2 hour stroll through Bellingrath Gardens (we didn't take in the home).  Beautiful, roses, orchids, exotic plants.  Outstanding landscaping, formal gardens, informal areas, rock gardens, Asian garden.  Plenty of beauty and helpful phone-based interpretive tour.

And if you travel another 1/2 hour south you can get to Dauphin Island, a Gulf barrier island with plenty of beautiful white sand beach.  But be prepared to gaze out on a dozen offshore oil rigs (maybe natural gas), which I'm sure don't do too much for the Gulf ecosystem.

On to Louisiana tomorrow!
