Buenos Aires, Argentina - City tour

Buenos Aires, Argentina - City tour

Last day of the adventure.  Had a 1/2 day city tour with Max.

We visited several neighborhoods across Buenos Aires, including a stop at the Cementerio de la Recoleta, where many of BA's elite families, including the Duartes (Evita Peron's remains are here), a very different cemetery than we've ever seen, fascinating.  Also visited a major square with Cathedral, and many government offices including the President's Pink House.  Finished up in the fun, but touristy, La Boca district.

Puerto Iguazu, Argentina - Iguazu Falls National Park

Puerto Iguazu, Argentina - Iguazu Falls National Park

Our skin has been absorbing the abundant sub-tropical humidity since our arrival coming out of the dust and aridity of the ‘desert’ steppe.  Matthias (our guide), escorted us on a half day tour of the Iguazu Falls National Parque, picking us up at 7:30 am to beat the crowds, and he was spot on.  We were the very first people to arrive at the falls on the upper trail, and had a ‘private’ guided walk, all the way in, then the hordes began to arrive, with every other family toting a big water jug of cold Yerba Mate tea.  We saw many birds, including the big Toucan(as we were leaving the park!  We’re molested by Coati, whom the tourists have turned into scavenging, bold, beggars.  Saw numerous shorebirds, ducks, snowy egret, cormorant, and other shore birds.  Beautiful, incredible greenery, orchid, vines, bromeliads, flowers, including invasive wandering Jew and ginger.  Swifts (the emblematic bird of this National park), which nest behind the Falls on the wet cliff face, amazing!  Saw a burrowing owl on the front lawn of the Amelia hotel.  Also saw an ovenbird nest (Argentina's National bird) and then the pair of ovenbirds themselves.  Matthias was great with explanations of the flora and fauna, geology and various histories of the area and the park.  Great day!

El Calafate, Argentina - Los Glaciares National Park, Estancia Nibepo Aike

El Calafate, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina

Arrived El Calafate from, Puerto Natales, Chile, via Bus-Sur, only a 2-1/2 hour trip if you could go straight through, but lengthy delays, exiting Chile (Border Control)and then entering, Customs and border patrol.  Saw tons of Guanaco and Choique smaller(ostrich) than Nandu.  After arrival and check-in at Kau Yatun (very nice 35 rm hotel grown from an original Estancia structure), our room plumbing dripped however, only downside.  We walked the main drag in-town, mirador, down to the Costanera, had a beer, back to the main drag and had a little Argentinian patata poutine and another beer before crashing back at the hotel.

Full-day Perito Merino glaciated tour including, boat tour on the South branch arm of Lago Argentino, short hike and touching the glacier.  Cafeteria lunch and viewpoint hiking to see the North face of the glacier, quite spectacular!  Back to town and had a nice pasta dinner with wine, ravioli dishes, at La Lechuga.

Next day, full day fishing adventure, fly fishing a small creek, so dry it disappeared in places, caught a handful of beautiful brook and brown trout, lots of strikes, on various wooly buggers and bead head nymphs.  Pisco sours and dinner at the hotel.  Saw tons of ducks, birds, Choique, Guanaco, and curious cows.

Two great days at Estancia Nibepo Aike.  Good food, surprisingly not too much over-the-top meat.  Plenty of lamb, in fact I overdid it at lunch yesterday, having seconds and thirds on the Asador/Parilla fire roasted lamb.  Nice wine, of course I paid too much, as it was from their stock.  First day had the Tour de estancia.  Learned about horses and sheep and cattle ranching, a barrel race, sheep shearing, history of the ranch and finished with an evening horse ride, and gathering up the sheep.  Next day, C and I did 2 hikes, a bike ride to go swimming, ouch on the bike.  Quite active for foreign elderly.
